Thursday, September 9th, 2010 by PalladiumHosting

On our blog, you are able to learn what you can do with your website once you have it, and how to go about running it. But if you don’t have a website to begin with, you may be wondering why, exactly, you’d want one to begin with.

Even if you don’t plan to run a business of any sort, a website serves many useful purposes. A variety of things can be done with a website, and it can provide a vehicle for you to express your opinions and express yourself in general. With a website, you can:

Watch the expiration date

Friday, May 28th, 2010 by PalladiumHosting

When you register a domain, your ownership isn’t absolute. Much like car registration, you must renew every year. As long as you ensure that your domain is current, you don’t run the risk of waking up one morning and finding out that your website has disappeared due to your registrar taking it offline.

It’s very simple to avoid domain lapse. You can enable automatic renewal, an option available with most registrars. As the name suggests, it will allow your registrar to automatically charge your debit or credit card on file (or PayPal account, depending on your registrar), usually precisely on the renewal date.

Keep an eye on your site

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 by PalladiumHosting

Your site’s uptime is critical. If your site crashes, you want to know right away. While we here at Palladium Hosting respond immediately to network issues, a problem may be isolated to your site, and in that case, you’ll want to know. There are many companies out there that can provide that service for you.

One such company is Alertra, which offers affordable monitoring for your website, FTP, SMTP, and POP networks, among many others. They also offer a free 30-day trial, allowing you to try before you by. You can get alerts sent to your e-mail, IM, or cell phone.

Another company is SiteUptime, which offers a free plan, a premium plan for $5 a month, and a platinum plan for $10 a month. The platinum plan offers SMS updates, according to their Web site.

Whichever company you choose, if you go with one of these companies, or another one, you’ll know within moments if your site goes down, and that will allow you to react appropriately. As the site administrator, you want to know what’s going on with your site at any given moment, and monitoring sites such as this gives you the knowledge you want and need.

Secure the domain

We all know that securing your server (SSH, control panels, etc.) is vital to its security. But just as important is the safety and security of your domain name. After all, it’s at the very core of your Web site.

If someone were to take control of your domain, that would mean that they’d be able to make your site disappear in the blink of an eye. They’d have full control. That, of course, would be a bad thing.

Get an SSL today

Thursday, April 1st, 2010 by PalladiumHosting

If you plan to run a business website, you’re likely going to want an SSL certificate. What this does is it shows visitors that your site is legitimate and verified. It is a must if you plan to collect payments or any sort of sensitive information.

You can tell a site is secure by looking in your browser’s address bar and seeing an https: connection as opposed to an http: connection. You will also see a padlock, and the browser bar will turn blue or green, depending upon the level of SSL certification that website has.

The importance of an SSL certificate cannot be understated. If you run any sort of business site and don’t have one, your customers will leave without purchasing anything, because they won’t have confidence that your site is secure. Purchasing and installing an SSL certificate is easy, and we here at Palladium Hosting can certainly help with that.

Once your SSL certificate is installed, and once your site has been configured properly for secure connections (something that’s easy to do with the major control panels), you will quickly see that it was time and money well spent.
